Ants in the garden: control methods, folk remedies

Ants in the garden: control methods, folk remedies

Plant pests

A garden is a small ecosystem in which well-groomed cultivated plants surrounded by the care and attention of the owner attract, unfortunately, not only beneficial insects. As soon as spring comes, pests announce a general mobilization in their ranks and begin to attack everything that seems edible to them. Garden ants are one of the most persistent, voracious and difficult to drive out harmful insects.
In this article, we will tell you about the harm ants do to gardens and vegetable gardens and how to cope with them.

Ants in the garden

Is the enemy so terrible?

From the school ecology course, everyone knows that ants are necessary in the forest: they catalyze decay, participate in soil formation, feed on many pests and themselves are food for birds. But if ants have settled in a garden or vegetable garden, they turn into the worst enemies of cultivated plants.

And here's what their harm is:

  • if garden - yellow and black - ants settle in the root part of woody (apple, pear, plum), shrub (currant, gooseberry) and herbaceous (strawberry) crops, then by their movement and an extensive network of passages made in the upper soil layer, the pests do not give weak young seedlings take root and are able to destroy the root system of even a strong adult plant;
  • Ants are very attracted to everything sweet in the garden: from fruits and berries to the honeydew produced by aphids. For the sake of the latter, ants protect, distribute and raise the offspring of this malicious pest: aphids - ants' livestock;
  • the toilers of the anthill create favorable conditions for the reproduction of other garden pests, for example, caterpillars, beetles and worms;
  • ants feed on weed seeds and store them in their underground passages, contributing to the spread and reproduction of weeds in the garden.

Not surprisingly, the damage caused by ants to horticultural crops makes gardeners seriously think about how to rid their plots of their presence.

Garden ants control methods

By far, the most effective means for the destruction of insects harmful to the economy are insecticides.

If the ant colony in the garden has reached a significant scale, then victory in the struggle for the harvest can only be achieved by using chemical means.

The most modern of the drugs have a contact-intestinal effect. You can use insecticide-poisoned baits to get the worker ants to deliver them to the uterus.

More gentle in relation to the garden ecosystem are methods of repelling pests with plants with insecticidal properties.

Tansy: from 0.8 kg of dry or 2 kg of freshly harvested plant mass, filled with a bucket of water, an infusion is prepared for two days. Before using it, it should be boiled for half an hour. The liquid part of the infusion is diluted with cold water in a ratio of 1: 1, after which 50 g of grated household or tar soap is added to the infusion-broth.

Mustard powder: The area where ants are spread should be covered with a thick layer of dry mustard. Its dust particles will fill the pore system of the anthill and force the pests to leave the trapped areas.

Parsley planted around plants that are attacked by pests will scare off ants with its smell.

Garlic with its specific aroma also scares off ants. Garlic arrows or gruel from cloves rub the trunks of objects of ant interest.

Corn flour, mixed with powdered sugar, can arouse the interest of pests, but after such a dessert, the digestive process in insects is completely upset, and the ant population dies out of hunger in 3 days.

Folk anti-ant recipes

The simplest but most effective poison against ants is recognized boric acid... To attract the attention of ants to the poison, you need to dissolve 2 cups of sugar in 1 liter of water and add 5 g of boric acid there. This solution should be used to treat the anthill or the surface of the soil near the plants that are suffering from the pest.

Experienced gardeners have long been used in the fight against ants. lemon juice, concentrated solution citric acid and vinegar solution (in a ratio of 1: 2 with water). Acidic solutions are poured into the anthill so that they seep into the very depths of the insect dwelling.

A universal remedy against pests, including ants, is considered baking soda or soda ash... On their basis, a bait is prepared: 100 g of sodium bicarbonate and 100 g of powdered sugar are dissolved in 50 ml of water.

Ant control will not be effective if regular preventive measures are not taken after the destruction or expulsion of the pests. The most important preventive measure is the destruction of aphids and clearing the site of weeds and debris.

You will see what other means can be used in the fight against ants in the following video:

Fighting ants in the apartment and in the garden: methods and means

Many owners of vegetable gardens and summer cottages have come across ants from their own experience. These small annoying insects can settle in city apartments, creating a lot of problems. Therefore, the question of how to get rid of ants remains relevant. We offer you to get acquainted with the most effective methods that both summer residents and city residents can use.

The benefits and harms of ants

The anthill and ants on the site are one of the links of the ecosystem, without which the balance in nature is disturbed, they can be of great benefit to plants, including:

  • pests of horticultural crops serve as food for them: slugs, spider mites, larvae, etc.
  • in nature, ant colonies are used by many birds to cleanse their plumage of fleas and other parasites - they climb into it and swim in a nest with red ants
  • making holes in the ground when building a nest, they loosen and fertilize the topsoil well, which has a positive effect on oxygenation of plant roots.

Interesting!

One anthill is capable of consuming 2 thousand different insects and their larvae per day, bringing deliverance to many plants in nature from pests.

  • very often nests are arranged in completely inappropriate places: in berry bushes, in the middle of garden beds, which inhibits the normal growth of surrounding crops
  • black ants feast on and damage the buds of roses and other flowers, berries, fruits, etc.
  • arrange farms with garden aphids, breeding it on cultivated plants, incl. on ornamental and fertile bushes: in raspberries, currants, on jasmine, because of which they die
  • plant seeds are transferred throughout the summer cottage, incl. and weeds, spreading them throughout the territory.

Based on the listed useful and bad habits of these insects, each owner must independently decide whether to destroy ants in his country house using a pesticide. Or simply drive them away from those places where they harm plantings using folk methods that are more popular in gardening.

Popular home methods

There are a lot of folk remedies for garden ants in the garden, and it is not at all necessary to go to the store for them. Almost every home has at least one of them. Let's consider only the most affordable and proven ones:

  • Given the insects' love for sweets, you need to put bait for garden ants on the site: several jars of jam, honey, or just sugar water. Ants will crawl there to eat, and the owner will only need to periodically rinse the jars with boiling water, killing the arthropods.
  • Regular ant baking soda works just as well as poison. It is densely sprinkled with all the anthills found on the site. Insects will quickly leave their now unusable housing.
  • You can speed up the procedure if you mix soda and powdered sugar in equal proportions and also sprinkle on the anthill. Six-legged sweet tooth will pounce on such a delicacy, not suspecting that it is fatal for them.
  • Soda against garden pests can be used in solution. Two tablespoons are poured into a one and a half liter plastic bottle. l. soda, pour water and mix well by shaking. The solution is poured onto the anthill, sprinkled with dry earth and covered with polyethylene to prevent oxygen from entering.
  • Another very simple, but effective way to remove garden ants using folk methods is to water the anthill to the very bottom with boiling water, warm lime, and urine from livestock.
  • It is known that some foods, for example, semolina, corn flour, millet from ants also help. Insects not only eat them themselves, but also carry them to the nursery to feed their fellows. Once in the stomach, cereals swell, and insects that are unable to digest them die. Depending on the size, semolina or millet from 2 to 3 kg is poured onto the anthill.
  • As in the case of soda, to speed up the process, cereals, flour or semolina from pests are mixed with sugar. For one serving of sugar, take 3-4 servings of other products.
  • Yeast has the same effect. A small amount of yeast is diluted in warm water with the addition of honey, jam or just sugar. The saucer with the potion can be placed near the anthill.
  • Ammonia from garden pests is also used very often. It is especially convenient when you need to eliminate the entire anthill entirely. Before removing the ant "capital", the place where it is located must be dug deep. In the process of digging, add ammonia diluted in water to the ground at the rate of 1 part of alcohol per 100 parts of water, as well as ash or lime. Such a solution for trees will seem like fertilizer, and the ants will die or leave.
  • Almost all strong pungent odors help get rid of garden ants for a long time: the spirit of smoked fish, herring stench, the aroma of fragrant vegetable oil, freshly ground cinnamon. Arthropods do not tolerate these aromas so much that, having barely smelled them, they leave their old dwellings and never return to them.
  • Sheepskin treated with carbolic acid will also help expel ants from their place. At a height of about 20 centimeters from the ground, the garden tree is wrapped in wide strips of chopped fur with wool outward. The strong smell of carbolic acid will drive away pests.
  • In the old pre-revolutionary newspapers, they often published extremely simple advice on how to get garden ants out with folk tricks. It was recommended to mix soot with ash, to cover the places of the earth with insects with this layer, then spill everything abundantly with a strong solution of salt water. It was believed that it would be possible to forget about ants in these parts of the garden for several years.

With an anthill, it is better to carry out actions in the evening, when all the insects return to their home.

Dandelion control methods

Getting rid of dandelions in the country is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance. There are many ways to do this. In this situation, you can use not only special devices for removing roots or chemicals, but also folk methods, which, as practice shows, do not cause any harm to the land plot. Folk ways to get rid of dandelions are an excellent solution if you need to remove weeds in the garden without harming the seedlings.

Regular mowing of grass

Often dandelions begin to attack a beautiful lawn, getting rid of which is quite problematic. Today there are a large number of remedies for dandelion lawn, which include both simple and more complex methods. The right choice will allow you to get rid of weeds once and for all, without causing much damage to the site.

A fairly effective way is mowing. In this case, you can use a trimmer or lawn mower. If necessary, the mower cutter height can be increased by 5 cm, so that the height of the lawn grass will prevent the development of dandelions.

With salt

Salt is an equally effective way. With its help, you can destroy the weeds growing on the land. The step-by-step algorithm of actions is as simple as possible and does not require significant effort. All that is required in this case is to find dandelions on the garden plot and sprinkle each bush with salt, using about 10-20 g of salt for this. After a while, the weed will begin to die.

Boiling water

As practice shows, there are a lot of dandelion remedies. In such situations, you can use not only special chemicals, but also the simplest options, which do not require large costs. One such method is using boiling water to get rid of dandelions.

The step-by-step algorithm of actions is as simple as possible, you need to boil the water and pour boiling water over the dandelions about 3-4 times, after which the plant withers and dries up.

Vinegar

If necessary, in order to get rid of dandelions on the land forever, you can use an improvised remedy that everyone has at home - vinegar essence. It is important to take into account the fact that pure vinegar cannot be used, it must be diluted in a small amount of water, after which the resulting solution is poured into a bottle with a garden spray.

The first step is to remove the aerial part of the dandelion, and then carefully treat the rhizome with vinegar solution. If the work is done correctly, then it will not be difficult to remove the roots, otherwise the procedure must be repeated.

Corn flour

It is important to consider the fact that using cornmeal as a dandelion-killing agent is a preventative method. Until the moment when the first shoots of dandelions appear on the land plot, it is recommended to sprinkle the soil abundantly with corn flour, and then repeat this procedure every 1.5 months.

When it becomes clear that the lawn is covered with dandelions, you will need to carry out the procedure more often - every month. As practice shows, corn flour interferes with the germination of seeds, as a result of which the number of weeds is significantly reduced.

Root remover and other tools

As evidenced by the reviews of many gardeners, it is quite difficult to remove dandelions from the lawn and flower beds, on which almost the entire area is occupied by overgrown perennial plants or the land plot is under turf.

In this case, it is best to use special devices designed for the targeted extermination of dandelions. Thanks to the use of such tools, you can not be afraid that irreparable damage will be caused to the grass covering on the lawn.

Since the root remover has a pointed edge, it is possible to penetrate quite deep into the soil, cut off the rhizome and remove the dandelions along with the aerial part. The holes remaining after work are small in size, while they quickly overgrow.

Improving soil composition

Many experienced gardeners recommend improving the composition of the soil, as a result of which over time you will not have to get rid of dandelions - they themselves will not grow on the land. In order to improve the soil, it is recommended to apply fertilizers. In addition, in order for moisture to persist for a long time, it is best to mulch the ground. Thanks to the mulch on the site, not only moisture will be preserved, but also the growth of dandelions will significantly slow down.

With the help of pets

If the problem appears in a summer cottage where there are pets, then it is quite effective to remove dandelions from the garden or lawn. In areas where there is abundant weed growth, it is recommended to drive out poultry, such as chickens, geese or ducks. As practice shows, pets eat dandelions for food, as a result of which they will help get rid of weeds on the site as soon as possible and without causing harm.

With a burner

According to many summer residents, you can remove dandelions from the site using a gas burner. In this case, work must be carried out after the dandelion has completely faded. Thus, the burner must be directed to the problematic area where weeds grow. After the aerial part has charred, it is necessary to point out the root system of the plant.

Hydrochloric acid

It is recommended to use hydrochloric acid only for removing dandelions from the lawn, since this method is not suitable for the garden and vegetable garden - it can be quite easy to harm crops. When working with hydrochloric acid, safety precautions are required. Wear gloves on your hands and a respirator on your face to prevent inhalation of harmful vapors. It is necessary to pour hydrochloric acid on the dandelion on all sides, after which, after a while, it will completely dry out.

Herbicides

As everyone knows, hand weeding is a rather laborious and time-consuming process. A completely different matter is the use of herbicides from dandelions on the lawn - this option is considered the most optimal if the land plot is completely overgrown with weeds, and it is not possible to get rid of it manually.

Thanks to the wide assortment range, you can find a large number of chemicals on sale that have different effects on dandelions:

  • all green grass that has been sprayed with liquid during processing will be destroyed
  • only cereals or the root system of weeds are subject to destruction.

If we consider chemicals of a wide spectrum of action, then in this case the following drugs are perfect:

  • Roundup
  • "Tornado"
  • Agrokiller.

These preparations will perfectly help to get rid of not only dandelions, but also wheatgrass, sow thistle and other types of weeds, which are sometimes extremely difficult to remove. A distinctive feature of chemicals is the fact that they continue to act even after spraying green spaces for several days.

What to choose: chemistry or folk remedies?

When embarking on the warpath for the harvest, first of all decide how you will deal with garden ants: with the help of poisonous chemicals or improvised home remedies. It would seem, why study folk recipes, waste time making compositions according to them, when you can simply buy ready-made "weapons" in any specialized store and not bother too much. But the opinions of experts on this issue are contradictory.

Basically, all chemicals against garden pests are very poisonous. And although manufacturers of toxic substances are trying to reduce the level of their toxicity, the danger still remains, especially for children, pregnant women, the elderly and allergy sufferers. Of course, we must also remember about our smaller brothers - pets. By inhaling or licking the poison, they can get health complications at best. Chemicals are also harmful: if used carelessly, they can seriously poison the soil.

Nevertheless, professionals, in recommendations on how to get rid of aphids and its "owners", do not advise completely neglecting specialized insecticides. In comparison with folk remedies, experts are considered their more effective drugs and advise using both methods, of course, strictly observing the instructions for use and safety.

How to deal with ants in the garden, how to get ants out?

To answer this question, we need to understand, with whom do we have to fight and what species of ants live in our areas?

Types of garden ants

Ants are found everywhere, there are a huge variety of species and varieties. In Russia, on garden plots more often there are two types of ants in total. This is a red myrmica and a black garden ant.

Red-haired myrmica, a big lover of aphids, grows up to 4-6 mm in size, painted in colors from yellow to red-brown. Their main food is small arthropods, both living and dead.

Another common garden dweller is black garden ant... Their main food is dead insects, but they can attack living ones, spreads and protects aphids.

Knowing the enemy by sight, you can think about how to drive the ants out of the site. However, when fighting ants, you need to remember that it will not be possible to completely expel them from the site and there is no need for this. It is necessary that they live in the garden, but their numbers were under control. First about

How to lime ants with folk remedies

  1. First you need to dig as deep as possible the area on which there is an anthill. When digging add ash, lime or ammonia to the ground.
  2. You can fill the anthill with the usual millet or semolina... This is the old grandmother's way. The groats should get inside the anthill. Depending on the size of the structure, it can take up to 2 kg of cereal. But according to gardeners who have used this method, the ants go away. It is not necessary to poison the cereals with poison, and so that the birds do not gnaw it, cover the cereals with grass or leaves. The birds will not get to the cereal, but the ants will.
  3. Any ants do not tolerate pungent odors... Ant-infested areas can be sprinkled with sifted wood ash mixed with lime.
  4. The ant family will not like it and smoked fish smellscrushed tops of tomatoes or parsley... A concentrated decoction is prepared from these plants. The higher the concentration of the decoction, the more effective. It is noticed that anthills are not found on tomato beds.
  5. Another way to use tomato tops... If you wrap tree trunks with tomato tops, then ants will not pass through such an obstacle.
  6. Ammonia... 1 tablespoon is diluted in 8 liters of water. A solution of such a concentration will be perceived by plants as fertilizer, and ants will go away, such a pungent odor is not for them.
  7. Even before the revolution, at the beginning of the 20th century, one could find in magazines of that time this kind of ant control advice: Cover the soil in the garden with a layer of soot mixed with ash and spill this mixture with a strong saline solution.
  8. Boiling water will help fight ants on the paths... Minks are poured into them. You need to prepare several buckets of hot water and spill the mink to the full depth of the house. It is better to carry out such an operation after sunset, when all the inhabitants return home.
  9. On busy ant paths, you can decompose strong-smelling plants: garlic, wormwood, tomato leaves.
  10. Ants dislike and sunflower oil smell, will scare away these insects spilled herring pickle from the store.

The following mixtures help in the fight against ants:

  • With egg... Boil medium potatoes and eggs, 3 pieces each. They are cleaned, potatoes are kneaded, mixed with mashed yolk, a tablespoon of sunflower oil, sugar and a bag of boric acid are added to them. Balls are rolled from the resulting mass and laid out in places where insects accumulate.
  • With minced meat... A teaspoon of boric acid powder is combined with two tablespoons of minced meat. Balls are sculpted from the resulting mixture and placed at the entrance to the anthill.
  • This solution works well: take 2 tbsp for a bucket of water. l. odorous (unrefined) vegetable oil, vinegar and dishwashing liquid... Remove the top layer of soil in place of the ant mink and pour the resulting mixture there. The place is covered with foil and left for a while.
  • The following composition will help in the fight against summer ants: hot pepper powder is mixed with a tablespoon of dishwashing liquid and diluted with one liter of boiling water... We keep the mixture for a day, filter and spray the bushes, and water the anthills.
  • Arrows of garlic... If you rub the tree trunk with juice from these arrows, it will become an insurmountable obstacle for the ants. Insects crawling up the trunk will return, and those in the crown will jump to the ground. The arrows of garlic, like the tops of a tomato, can be tied to the trunk of a fruit tree.
  • Sweet Ant Trap... In half a liter of water, dissolve half a teaspoon of boric acid and a tablespoon of sugar. The resulting solution is poured into a shallow dish (lid or saucer) and the ants are provided with access to the liquid.
  • Another effective bait. Yeast (1 tablespoon) is diluted with cool water to a thick paste. Add a teaspoon of jam and mix again until smooth. The resulting mixture is spread on cardboard or plastic and placed in places where ants accumulate. You need to cook the yeast mixture a little so that it does not have time to dry. Will not allow the bait to dry, protect from the sun and wind a film in which an entrance for insects is left.
  • You can protect a tree from ants by creating irresistible for them water barrier... This will require an unnecessary car tire. It is cut lengthwise into two parts. It turns out two rings. The ring is dug into the ground. Water poured into the ring will block the path of the ants to the tree. This method is suitable if the crown of the tree passes through the inner diameter of the wheel. To protect a larger tree from insects, you need to cut the ring from the tire and put it on the trunk. The tire is also dug into the ground. To prevent water from flowing out of the ring, the joint is covered with plasticine or sealant.
  • Preparations for mosquitoes "Taiga" or "Komarex"Applied to the trunk of a tree will prevent the ants from reaching the aphids for several days.
  • Another folk remedy that drives ants out of their homes is cinnamon... The cinnamon powder should be scattered around the ant holes and inside. Such a smell, unbearable for insects, will make them leave this place and look for a more comfortable one.
  • Protect the garden from harmful ants can sheepskin... It is cut into strips, which are wrapped around the trunk of a tree at a height of 20 cm from the ground with the wool outward. The protective effect of carbolic acid will increase, the pungent smell of which will scare away not only ants.

Chemicals for getting rid of ants in the area

The industry also does not stand still and produces preparations for fighting ants.

"Thunder-2"... Available in the form of granules. They are scattered on the places where ants accumulate and they leave.

Another, repeatedly tested on their own experience, drug "Phenaxin"... On a warm spring day, the entire wall of our house from the ground to the window was black from ants crawling out into the sun. I didn't want to have so many neighbors in the house. In the evening I sprinkled the entrances to the burrows with "Phenaxin". In the morning, not a single ant appeared either on the wall or nearby in the burrows. They do not live in these burrows even now, two years later.

Phenaxin packaging is convenient for dusting the desired area. Through several holes punctured in the package, the powder is poured out very sparingly. They can be sprinkled on a cluster of aphids anywhere. After that, both aphids and ants disappear.

Another remedy tested by my friends is gel "Great warrior"... They got ants in their country house. They dug the mink on the veranda, under the floor. It was difficult to get them there, at great depths. We've tried a lot of remedies. Some of the ants died, but new ones appeared. Gel was applied to the floor around the mink. The ants liked it and the insects happily dragged the bait to the pantries.

Then the pestilence of the ants began. The ants regularly carried the dead insects to the surface. Once a week, the owners came to the dacha and took out almost a whole scoop of dead ants and applied a new portion of the gel. Each time, the number of the dead became less and less. A month later, the insects were gone.

There are other ant killers in stores. "Anteater", "Muratsid" - they are dissolved in water and watered over the places of accumulation"Clean house" - gel applied to cartons and placed near minks or in places of feeding.
